Steps to Health is a wellness program offered in Hamilton to adults living with a mental health diagnosis. It is a program within Good Shepherd HOMES but is open to the community as well. The programs are offered at no cost and to become a member you can refer yourself by calling our office.
The Steps to Health program has many offerings including a walking groups, YMCA workouts, Aquafit, yoga, a weight loss support group, breakfast club, seated exercises, dog walking group, Tai Chi, cooking circuit training, smoking management, bike group, garden group and a variety of adventure recreation.
We take referrals from any mental health agency in the community, and partner with community groups to make it all possible including: the Mental Health Rights Coalition, St Joseph's Hospital Diabetes Program, Family Health Teams, Runners Den, YMCA, Hill Community Garden, Tai Chi Society, Transitions to Homes, and Hamilton Tobacco Community of Practice.
We have 2 peers that work in the Steps to Health program, Dave does support at the YMCA and John co-facilitates the smoking management program. We also partner with the Mental Health Rights Coalition and hire peer support workers to support clients one on one for bus training or to attend programs.
