The purpose of this guide is to raise awareness of the value of physical activity and healthy eating and their role in facilitating recovery for mental health consumers.
Our environmental scans reveal that people with serious mental illnesses are participating in healthy eating and physical activity programs throughout Ontario through their connection with community mental health agencies. While several barriers to implementing programs were also identified, opportunities to build on existing provincial and local initiatives are numerous.
“Making the Case” speaks to the value of building capacity within the community mental health sector to promote healthy eating and physical activity as essential elements of recovery. Their mandate, established relationships with clients, and willingness to partner with local health promotion organizations, places mental health agencies in a position to promote and provide such programs to consumers throughout Ontario.
